for- and fore-
for- and fore-
The prefix for- occurs in a number of words formed in Old English, such as forbid, forgive, and forsake. It is not an active prefix in the sense of being used to form new words. Fore-, on the other hand, is a prefix native to English and is widely used to form verbs and nouns from existing words in the general meanings ‘before, in front’ with regard both to space and to time, e.g. forearm, foreshorten, foretell. Special care should be taken to distinguish between words that exist in both for- and fore- forms; see the separate entries for forbear, forebear; forgo, forego.
